They constantly act on the limbic system. Panic stories stimulate the production of glucocorticoids (cortisol). This clutters your immune system. Your body is in a state of chronic stress. Other possible side effects include fear, aggression, and numbness.

News increases the number of cognitive errors

The news stream is the father of all cognitive errors: the craving for confirmation. We become overconfident, take stupid risks, and underestimate opportunities. Our brains crave stories that “make sense,” even if they are not true. Any journalist who writes that "the market exists because of X" or "the company went bankrupt because of Y" is an idiot. We are fed up with this cheap way of "explaining" the world.

News suppresses thinking

Thinking requires concentration. Concentration requires continuous time. The news is specially designed to interrupt you. They are like viruses that steal your attention for their own purposes. News reduces the number of thinking people. News is seriously affecting memory. Since news disturbs concentration, it weakens comprehension.

News works like a drug

Having learned about any incident, we want to know and how it will end. Remembering the hundreds of news stories, we are less able to control this urge. Scientists are used to thinking that the tight connections among the 100 billion neurons in our heads are already complete by the time we reach adulthood. Today we know that this is not the case. Nerve cells regularly break old connections and form new ones. The more news we consume, the more we train the neural circuits responsible for superficial acquaintance and performing multiple tasks, while ignoring those responsible for reading and focused thinking. Most news consumers - even if they were previously avid book readers - have lost the ability to read long articles or books. After four to five pages they get tired, concentration disappears, anxiety appears. It is not because they have gotten older or because they have a lot of things to do. It's just that the physical structure of the brain has changed.

News makes us passive

The vast majority of news stories are about things that you cannot influence. The daily repetition of the fact that we are powerless makes us passive. They grind us until we adopt a pessimistic, unfeeling, sarcastic and fatalistic worldview. There is a term for this phenomenon - "learned helplessness."

News kills creativity

Finally, what we already know limits our creativity. This is one of the reasons why mathematicians, writers, composers and entrepreneurs often produce their very best creative work in their youth. Their brains enjoy a wide, uninhabited space that enables them to come up with and implement new ideas. I don’t know a single truly creative person with a fondness for news - not a writer, not a composer, mathematician, doctor, scientist, musician, designer, architect or artist. On the other hand, I know a bunch of angry, uncreative people who use news like drugs. If you want to use old solutions, read the news. If you are looking for new solutions, you shouldn't.
